I've always written. It's my favorite form of expression, (and it's given me more unfinished projects than I'd like to admit)
I've always sung too — choir, a brief stint in a band, highschool musicals whenever I could... It never once occurred to me that any of it could be more than what it was. The problem was, I grew up believing you couldn't pursue music or writing unless you were exceptional, so the most I ever game it was the occasional song in the shower, or poem in a journal.
It took me many years to realize that rule was never real. And once I saw that, I started treating music and writing as something I could explore - without the expectation that I had to become anything.
My process is simple. If it's on my heart, I journal it. If I feel inspired, I turn it into a song. And if I love what it sounds like, I record it.
Here's the honest reason I love it: it isn't my career, and that's exactly what keeps it fun.
No expectations, no pressure to make it into something. Just exploration. I get creative outlets in my work too, but this one is personal in a different way — it's a place to take a thought or a feeling, put it into words, and watch it come to life as something you can actually hear. I still find that fascinating. And fulfilling. And, more often than I'd like to admit, genuinely challenging.
But like everything in my life, that trial and error process has served me. Because I've allowed myself to explore music, I can now say I'm a songwriter and recording artist. What genre, you ask?
